Pedaling Beyond Pollution

Don’t have the money for a hybrid? In a city that’s ranked second in the nation for bicycle commuting, here are three reasons why you should ditch your gas-guzzling four wheels for two wheels.

It’s exercise. Whether biking to work or hitting the trails on the weekend, biking is a great way to stay in shape. A moderate cycling session burns 508 calories per hour, and a vigorous workout will burn twice that number.

Bikes are cheap and repairs are relatively inexpensive. Used bikes can be purchased for less than $100 and are available on classified ad Web sites or at several shops in the metro area.

Get in a good mood and a healthy heart. A rigorous biking session will improve cardiovascular health and keep stress and anxiety levels low. Biking also helps prevent serious conditions such as high blood pressure and can reduce the risk of heart disease by as much as 22 percent.
